Becoming a Good Parent

Caring for the parent’s mind is the path to good parenting.

All Meditation Benefits

You know what to do. It still does not work at home.

Phone in hand from breakfast until bed. You watch it and something tightens. On the weekend it becomes gaming, and you go from telling them off to snapping, and then to not being able to hold your temper at all.

And then comes the second thought, the one more parents have than admit it: maybe I am not a good enough parent.

Discipline does not change it. Swallowing the anger and speaking nicely does not change it either. There is no shortage of parenting courses and expert advice — but you come home, see the phone again, and the anger comes up from somewhere deep anyway.

Empty out this much

  • What you expect and hope for from your child
  • The wish that they turn out the way you planned
  • The mind that does not quite trust them
  • Whatever you might be trying to make up for through them
  • Everything you have stored up and not looked at

The Releasing Method

Let go of your ideas about your child, and you find the way yourself

The reason memorised parenting knowledge does not survive contact with your living room is simple: the mind a parent has accumulated over their own life makes it very hard to stand where the child is standing.

Look back at yourself as you deal with your child, and let that mind go. Your mind gets bigger. And a bigger mind is what makes the next decision the right one.

What changes

  • Holding your temper stops taking so much effort
  • You can accept your child exactly as they are
  • You ask what they need instead of reaching for the nagging
  • When a decision about them comes up, you judge it wisely
  • They notice that something about you has changed
